Daiv
(b. 1998, China)
Born in Shanghai and based in Seoul, Weihao Chen (DAIV) works in a variety of fields ranging from graffiti, rap, illustration, to fashion design and fine art. Through strong contrasting colors, street art-inspired designs, and his own characters, DAIV grafts his inner imagery with perceived social phenomena in eliciting emotions from the audience. Elements of fantasy and the comical nature of his characters reveal universal human emotions, while his graffiti and hip-hop style drawings are means of socio-political commentary.
Through our understanding of relativity, we understand that at sufficient speeds we can slow down or turn back time. Through this series, I rev the racing car to full throttle—hurtling back through time to a more precious period of our youth and childhood.

Artist Statement
We want time to either pass by quickly or slowly. For those who wish to escape their realities and predicaments by forwarding time, hop into my car and we can ride through to another time and space.

Beyond speed lies a sense of grounded comfort. Perhaps in your childhood, you received a memorable gift from someone. These paintings harken back to those joyous afternoons spent with our gifts.
Beyond Speed (2024)
Acrylic on canvas
80 x 100cm
You speed across time, back into your child. This racing car becomes a toy car, and Daiv crawls out of the car. Observing all this, you are a mere 1.2 meters-tall sitting in front of the television. Though enraptured by the animation on the screen, you forget the contents of the show. But that’s okay, because Daiv recorded those moments in hopes to explore those precious moments of yours.
Not Toy (2024)

One afternoon in your childhood, you friend gave you a gift as a token of friendship.

岂曰无衣,与子同袍. This phrase from the Chinese “Book of Songs” represents unity and solidarity in friendship. It is an interpretation of the word “friend”, and an expression of innocence behind such sentiments.

This is the final installment of the series. Your friend turns out to be Mickey Mouse who lights your car on fire and escapes. You flee the scene in disbelief as spectators around you roar and wave their flags. Your friendship, like smoke, goes up in flames.
