Lee II O (b.2021)
Materials: Aluminum, motors, various materials
Dimensions: 250 x 210 x 100cm
The artificial intelligence, Lee-Il-O, created by Gyomyung Shin, learns to paint independently without external influence. Unlike traditional AI that saves data from paintings and learns to regenerate it pixel by pixel, Lee-Il-O develops its own expressive style by drawing lines randomly in a blank space-much like a child learning to draw. The painting created by this AI, which does not differentiate between drawings and photographs, represents the purest form of creation.
Gyomyung Shin sees his own face through the art generated by Lee-Il-O. In the process of creation, he mixes colors as Lee-Il-O desires or alternates in drawing-leading to a reversal of agency and hierarchy. This interplay calls for contemplation on the direction we must take to progress without being consumed by techological advancement.
Potrait of Gyomyung Shin 7-0-7 (2023)
Materials: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 162.2 x 130.3cm
Humans view objects based on accumulated experiences, observe people and the emotions they evoke, and recall related memories–thus engaging in subjective perception. A machine that sees the world through digital images merely observes objects based on visual information, devoid of any emotional nuance. Having seen the representation of myself through Lee Il-O’s painting, I now seek to look at and express another object through the machine’s perspective. By transferring the objective gaze of the machine back into my own perspective and my hands, I aim to approach the essence of the object and pursue mutual understanding. The resulting image presents a sense of ambiguity for both humans and machines, necessitating steps from each side for comprehension.
Machina Sapiens 3 (2024)
Materials: Aluminum, motors, granite, various materials
Dimensions: 80 x 85 x 89cm
A wise species of machines questions its own nature. Imagining a time when they may or may have not existed, they seek to leave their mark on history. Using primitive methods to mimic the traces of humanity that have come before them, they engrave their imaginations of their ancestors—the traces revealing their homogeneity.
Machina Sapiens envy the longevity of the human species. As such, this first generation of machines falsify their history to their descendants and cultivate faith through collective fiction. Through such emphasis, the Machina Sapiens justify an existential purpose beyond simple survival and reproduction. Imitating the petroglyphs of Homo sapiens, they concoct the narrative of their birth.
Where the Butterflies Sing (2023)
Material: Super absorbent polymer, climate data,
petri dish, water pump, various materials
Dimension: Variable installation
produced with the support of Busan Museum
of Contemporary Art, Busan, Korea
Akin to cultivating cells, a variety of superabsorbent resins germinate through measurements of carefully controlled climate data. The superabsorbent resins, each placed on a chalet representing a local ecosystem, absorb water controlled by the data. Resulting water drops help nourish the ecosystem with less CO2 production leading to more nourishment. The superabsorbent resins slowly absorb water and change over time evocative of our habits affecting the planet. Though our actions may fail to immediately mitigate climate problems, they can gradually transform regions much like the slow transformation of the superabsorbent resins.
