Artists > JeongHyun Ha
Describing her joyful creative process as her own “play”, Ha expresses this freedom through the painting methods of scratching and rubbing the colors on canvas. Through this process, her inner memories burst forth continuously like a series creating depth of layers. Contrary to an expectation of turbidity, the myriad of colors and layers appear luminous and impresses a certain delicate clarity that effectively captures memories of her bright and cheerful childhood.

Artist Statement
My artistic process is without preconceived intent or concept and consists of oil bars to draw and paint, and my hands and brush to spread. Free from obstruction, this process becomes my personal amusement: my own joyous act.
The purity of this act leaves transparent and pure traces of self on canvas. At the point of contact between oil bar and canvas, the act begins as countless memories and feelings burst forth. They are both clear yet vague. They are objects or situations, specific times or spaces, particular feelings or atmospheres. The diversity and complexity that comprise these acts are then superimposed and layered on the same canvas or at times, several different canvases.
This dense superimposition represents the beautiful and precious moments of my life—the unadulterated periods in which I received infinite love, cheerfully interacted with others, and passed each day in bliss. And now with my child, the ordinary moments have become powerful channels for creation and art. These pathways allow my latent childhood moments of purity and life to surge forth richly, intensely, and ceaselessly to intersect and mingle with the present. Such experiences remind me of life’s beautiful moments and provide me with an ample well of inspiration—ultimately manifesting in the artistic process of my studio.
These acts contain moments that are pleasant and happy, memories that are sad and beautiful, and instances that are amusing but abrasive. Yet, these beautiful moments are finite and nonexistent which pushes me toward intense sadness and fear. However, as they blur and fade, they reappear—present and vivid as traces of my act. Myriads of finite pieces assemble on canvas and burgeon infinitely into life. So I continue this act, this play. The clear, pure, and luminous moments of my life accumulate and layer on canvas creating a deep, heavy density. Ultimately, this “luminous density” expresses my life and drawing.
