Hyunmo Yang focuses on visual perception and the process of accepting meaning derived from such methods. In this exhibition, Yang examines images that are born out of the antipodal relationship between blurriness and density and the points at which they intersect. Symmetry is commonly understood as mere repetition of identical shapes. However, underscoring this repetition is a delicate process of equilibrium between figure A and its variant, A1. Most objects, both natural and artificial, follow a certain pattern or rule of repetition. Here, Yang puts his own twist by incorporating a sense of flickering candlelight as lens of perception. The candle constantly flickers but maintains its centered shape despite the constant motion. The artist inspects this diametric of density and fluidity of shapes sourced in the trembling flames of a candle and maintains his perception of balance.

The exhibition presents three series of paintings based on these reflections: “Shield”, which embodies solidity, “Soft Squares” which questions such solidity, and “Burning Symmetry” which blurs solidity. “Shield” comprises of Yang’s symmetry and brings into clear focus a sense of density rooted in his impressions. Taking cues from such objects of shields, emblems, and turtle shells the artist draws clear, crips lines and shapes in his penchant for density. “Soft Squares” is a series that questions this solidity and inspires a sense of mobility and tactility along the graphic squares and soft touches of his paintings. The final installment in “Burning Symmetry” creates visual impressions of blurred movements rather than chasing distinct symmetry.

“The horizons of oceans remain blurry no matter our proximity to them. The distance from land, colorless, seem eternal. Only after facing such unattainable distances can we sense blurriness.” (Hyumo Yang, 2023). Yang’s meditations on blurriness and solidity and the meanings latent in this relationship connects such counter concepts. His paradoxical imagination ultimately is the foundation for his works—the accumulative brushstrokes capturing the continuous movement in transition. The blurred symmetry and the burning squares become denser the more they blur and burn.
