DEFINE: SEOUL 2024

Human-Hand-Machine

Oct 30 - Nov 3, 2024

S Factory, Seoul, South Korea

Exhibition Note

Roy Gallery will showcase a new exhibition booth at the 2024 Define Seoul under the theme "Human-Hand-Machine." On one side, there will be figurative works by Lee Yunsung and abstract paintings by Yang Hyunmo. On the other side, paintings created by machines will be displayed, not by human hands, made by Shin Gyomyung. Furniture from Standard a., precisely crafted using computer and CNC processes, along with lacquerware created by intangible cultural asset No. 13 Park Gangyong, a master of traditional craft from Jeonbuk, will also be featured.

Painting, furniture, and crafts all share a commonality: they emerge from the friction between humans and materials. In the production of art, design, and daily objects, there has been a pursuit of the mechanization of humans and the humanization of machines. The painter embodies a more precise two-dimensional world through the body, akin to a machine, developed through training. On the opposite side of the human who learns and controls breathing, there exists a painting created by a machine operated by a program coded by humans. The machine, which generates imperfection, randomness, and unpredictable outcomes, reveals the intellectual activities of the human behind it. Craftspeople continuously reproduce natural patterns that cannot be explained solely by reason and concepts, pushing through the gaps between material and sensation, acquired over a long period.

Roy Gallery, in collaboration with SUPERELLIPSE and Studio May’re, aims to showcase the diverse scales presented by paintings and furniture, along with the collaboration between machines and humans that supports them. Although they start from different directions, they may show similar results or completely different outcomes while sharing similar processes. Despite the differences, they all strive for a naturalness that transcends super-precise processes and perfect techniques.

To achieve this, the exhibition space is designed with a symmetrical structure based on a central axis. The central structure of the exhibition space helps maximize the audience's curiosity. This structure supports elements while revealing the back of the canvas and the machinery through gaps. It is composed like a single landscape, yet serves to block the gaze from flowing continuously. Within this, the surfaces of ceramics, furniture, and canvases become the backdrop for depicting a new era where the analog and digital intertwine, alternating between humans and machines. The audience reflects on the existence of hands that traverse between brushes and computers, creating paintings, furniture, and crafts amidst the three-dimensional structure.
